What we do

Strategic communication

We support our clients and partners in developing communication strategies and structures, as well as products and events, to reach out to and interact with a diversity of target groups. Examples of our work are:

‚CEPA‘ for biodiversity: Strategic communication guide for ABS

In 2012, GeoMedia and our in-house partner MediaCompany produced a comprehensive guide on strategic communication for ABS. The guide covers all relevant fields of action to implement ABS at the national level, provides a systematic approach to developing communication strategies for different target groups, and offers a variety of tools and methods for every step along the way. The guide keeps being met with great demand and has been published in four languages. You can download the PDF-brochures here:

ABS communication strategy development in India

Using the above guide, GeoMedia supported the German-Indian ABS Partnership Project in developing a nationwide ABS communication strategy in 2018 and 2019. From the beginning, the Indian ABS communication strategy was laid out as an iterative process, with analyses, planning and implementation going hand-in-hand and feeding into each other. A multi-stakeholder workshop in May 2018 helped identify the most relevant ABS stakeholder groups in the country, their basic features and communication needs. The project partners then developed specific approaches for each target group, including communication objectives and indicators, suitable mixes of channels, and relevant messages.

Subsequent workshops in July 2019, with official representatives from 31 Indian federal states helped validate the strategy and further refine needs for support at state level. The final strategy document was published by the National Biodiversity Authority of India. The handbook contains extensive information about the process and its results, as well as descriptions of all approaches and methods used.

Agenda 2030 in Germany: Communication strategy for BMZ

In 2017/18, GeoMedia and our in-house partner MediaCompany developed an integrated communication strategy for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Aiming to promote implementation of the Agenda 2030 in Germany, the strategy addresses governmental and non-governmental development agencies as well as the broader public. Its main goal is to foster awareness of the Agenda 2030, increase knowledge about its principles and goals, and encourage everyone to contribute effectively to the required transformation.

A kick-off workshop with BMZ served to define overall communication goals, key messages and target groups. A series of in-depth interviews with representatives of different groups and organisations revealed the main communication needs. Further analysis of the interview results helped identify and refine impact-oriented communication goals as well as suitable communication channels.

Based on all this, GeoMedia and MediaCompany proposed an overall strategic communication concept to BMZ, together with a wealth of options and ideas for communication formats and products – from print to audio and video to virtual and face-to-face. The strategy supports all departments of the Ministry in their efforts to implement the Agenda 2030 by providing orientation for reaching out to and communicating with actors in the field.

Manual: Environmental Education in Laos

In 2017, we supported the Lao-German project ‚ProCEEd‘ in safeguarding the results and experiences gained in six years of nation-wide environmental education and communication activities, by compiling a comprehensive manual on Environmental Education and Communication in Laos.

The three volumes of the manual address:

1. Conceptualising and managing environmental tours

2. Training and preparing staff and volunteers who conduct the tours

3. Participatory methods and games for action learing on the ground

The manual has been fully translated into Lao language, thus enabling the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) to continue implementing its successful environmental education and communication activities. The English version makes this wealth of knowledge, experiences and tools accessible to other countries.
